So much has happened since my last post that I wanted to share with you what is going on. My life has changed dramatically, you see my husband was diagnosed May 2011 with lung cancer. We also found out that the cancer was in his colon. A trip to the most wonderful place "Cancer Treatment Center of America" in Zion, Illinois began the process of trying to beat this terrible disease. But with all the latest technology and everything done for him that could be, he passed away January 15, 2012. My heart just broke, and my life as I stated earlier has completely changed. I loved and enjoyed so many decorating projects, but now just the will to survive is at the top of the list. Maybe one day, I will again enjoy these things, I hope so, but in the meantime I ask for your prayers. Life does go on, and grief is a process that has to be endured.
Thank you for stopping by! I will be back some day. Making my home beautiful was so much a part of me that I do believe that one day, it will again.

Blessings and joy to you!Shirleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15783758060848480856noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5768291432435270478.post-15322221876331634212011-05-11T12:53:00.000-07:002011-05-11T13:07:58.872-07:00New (old) Sideboard!

Ugly is not an appropriate word for this first picture. It was in really bad shape, but just had to try to do something with it. So, first state was just to clean and get ready to prime. I wasn't going to waste any time or effort on sanding! lol
I love chickens! It doesn't matter if it is roosters, hens or chicks. I just love them, and also love to decorate with them. I try to keep them in my kitchen, dining room, and sunroom, but they have ventured onto the back porch. How many is to many? I haven't figured it out yet. Whether I am looking at goodwill or garage sales, my eyes are trained to look for chickens! This little brown hen is also nesting to and have to have a couple of eggs. These are so easy to put together, so I keep my booth stocked because others like them to. She has found a place in my dining room for now, who knows where she will wind up!
Thank you for stopping by, I love your comments.
Have a blessed week!

What poodle or two wouldn't want to sleep in that cute little bed? I have two of them, Maddy and Bailey and they love their little beds, but this one may be the only one for awhile. It did take a while to finish it. In case you are wondering what it use to be in its former life, well it was an end table that was given to me. We turned it upside down, hubby cut off the two legs at the bottom and then I bought wooden pieces from Hobby Lobby to use for finials. The feet was in my stash, just plastic screw on legs that attached really easy. After all the priming, I was ready to paint! What a job, it really is hand painted so you will see some imperfections. So not tape and no measuring, it takes to long. lol. The headboard is a picture frame that I paid 2.00 at our local goodwill. On the back of the frame I painted over the little tabs that keeps the picture in, so I can change the pictures. The pillow in there now is temporary until I can find one that really fits and of course the right color. So, after a few hours of painting and sealing, it is finally ready to use. Of course, it will be a few days, poodles are very picky and until the paint smells go away, I don't think they will use it. Will I do another one! I think so, and have had requests already from some friends.

Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments.

I do just love those birds nests. Seems like I am seeing them everywhere! So for my project for today, since it is a little cool outside was to make something for a table in my family room. I first started with some old books I had taken the backs off and then antiqued the pages, (an idea from Pottery Barn) of course I did have to add a little gold (they didn't) . Next I had some burlap material that I just cut into strips to hold it together and make a bow. The birds nest was fun, the nest itself was 25 cents at goodwill and the rest I had in my shop. I just glued the feathers and eggs inside and added the small branches and the berries. And it was finished, took no time at all. My den did not have the light I needed for good pictures so I took these in the sun porch.

Thank you for stopping by and for your sweet comments.

I am linking up with Wassup Wednesdays with Kara over at Elements Interiors. I hope you aren't getting tired of just seeing floral arrangements! Seems like everyone wants one, so I just keep making them. It is getting warmer so I will be out painting. Lots of things to finish and when its cold, painting is just not happen. This arrangement is another one for church! Spring is so much fun because I can mix colors to my hearts content! Thank you for stopping by and leaving your sweet comments. Have a blessed week!

I don't know about you, but I am sooo ready for Spring! This does seem to be the longest winter ever. Cold and snow like we have not experienced in a long time. So needless to say, I have Spring Fever bad! lol. I have been motivated to work in my shop. All winter long, I have been doing catch-up in my home. Painting cabinets and decorating projects have kept me plenty busy. This past week I decided to design another Blooming Lamp, I had one in my booth at the flea market,( my daughter confiscated the other one. lol) so I thought I would make another one. Also we have a sun porch on the back of our house next to the patio, and we have a sun room which is in the front. It is more part of our house, while the sun porch is much more casual. Anyway, it needed to be ready for spring to so that was the only reason I needed. Hope you enjoy them to. Thank you for stopping by and for you kind comments. They are beautiful, aren't they? Back before Christmas I had a phone call from the people we bought our house from, she wanted to know if I would be interested in some odds and ends from an auction. Well, of course I did. When I saw what she was talking about, I almost fell out! I expected a "few" things and certainly wasn't prepared for at least 20 plastic containers! Needless to say, I bought it! I sat up all night going through it! I was like a little girl at Christmas! Anyway, to explain these eggs were in a box labeled "Easter". I did some research on these and they were made between 1999 and 2003 for Department 56. The little tree I already had so it was easy just to put in a glass container. I love them and plan on keeping them. Who knows they might be a collectors item some day. Thank you for stopping by. I am linking up with Kara over at Whassup Wednesday! Well, I still have Spring Fever really bad so I have been redoing some of the florals in my home. This one in the corner was a have-to after my daughter came and "took" my blooming lamp. lol. Anyway, I bought these lighted branches at Kirklands not really sure if I liked them or not exactly what I was going to do with them. After seeing some in a floral arrangement (of all places in the doctors office), I decided to somewhat duplicate it. I used a skinny wreath wrapped in greenery, then put the branches in and just built up around it with the flowers and bird house (and the bird). The container is a mahogany color that goes really well with the rest of my room. Surely there must be more to do with them then this or just sticking them in a vase. What do you think? I appreciate you stopping by, have a great week.

Do you think if all of us think Spring, it will come faster? lol. All the snow and cold weather we had, then to warm up for the past week was a shocker! We enjoyed the snow, but then we were tired of it! Come on Spring! So here is just one of the arrangements that I have been working on. I love the trend that is taking place with the style of wreaths, so just had to try one. All my grapevine wreaths were the big chunky ones, so the solution, take the wire loose that is holding them together and make two or three out of one. Instead of covering the grapevine up, some of it needs to show. Then it is simple to add greenery and the flowers of your choice. In some floral design there are rules, like the rule of threes, and the one and half to two times the size of your containers just to name a few. But then there is just "if it looks right to me". Everyone has their own style. I have to say my favorite is European Design. I love the open airy, yet very traditional flowers and the containers they are put in. I leaned the very basics when I went to floral design in Memphis, then later on learned country style from a lady that gave lessons. From then on, it really was just developing my own style. Anyway, all that just to say, I am on a roll! I have a booth that I share with a friend and we have got a lot to do getting ready for Spring! Wooo Hooo! This wreath along with two other arrangements are already on display, now just hoping they will sell.

Thank you for stopping by, I love your comments and look forward to checking out all the wonderful projects at Metamorphosis Monday, the link follows.

I hope you have a wonderful week.
Is he cute or what? This little fella that I call "Tom" was a gift from my sister in law many years ago. His neck was broken and had to be repaired and of course he had to be painted to. He is very heavy, but I have toted him around from literally three states until we finally moved here. Since I have been snowed in and today was the first pretty day (60*) in quite awhile, I was itching to do something constructive. I saw "Tom" sitting in the sun room and thought OK, today is the day to change him. So with a paint brush and lots of tinted glaze, he got a good makeover. Does he now just look like he has been playing in the dirt? Antiquing wasn't good enough, no, he had to look like a dirty little boy. lol. And he does! I just love him. I even gave Tom center stage on my dining room table. He just brings a smile to my face every time I walk by. I hope you enjoy him to! If the weather stays nice, no telling what I am liable to get into! Thanks for stopping by! I am linking up with Metamorphosis Monday, be sure and check out all the talented ladies over there.

I have been junking again! I love to visit goodwill, flea markets, used furniture stores, etc. you get the picture? lol. It is just fun to always be on the look out for unusual "treasures". On my last trip, I found this topiary except it didn't look like this. It had seen better days, the top was actually sitting in the container (love that, it is metal) and wasn't even on a dowel. I didn't have to redo the foam, just found a piece of bamboo that worked and got it hot glued in there. There was a place in the "ball" to fix the bamboo and I was ready to go. The greenery was just placed around the center and a small dried flower was inserted. Wa laaaaa, it was finished! How do you like the bowl? I just love it to, what a bargain for 6.00. For now I will let sit there, but eventually will put a flower arrangement in it. The table was 12.50 and just needed painted. Another one of my vices! When the weather is like this, finding something to do is necessary, so today I started taking the fabric off a 2.00 queen ann that I got at a garage sale. But that is another post and it will be a loooong time off. Thank you for stopping by! I am linking up with Metamorphosis Monday! (link follows). You will be inspired!
I love this idea, not mine though. Kara from Elements Interiors came up with this one. Talk about a talented lady, she truly is. Sometimes I wonder how in the world she comes up with all these creative ideas. Her link is enclosed so you can visit her blog.
Anyway all that to let you know where I was coming from. Today was such a beautiful day and I was inspired to try and see what I came up with. The first one with the red roses is in a mahogany wooden box. Filled with foam and the lamp glued and wired securely. Be careful and keep the glue away from the cord. Moss was then applied and the flowers was placed. The other lamp was secured the same way, just different pot and flowers. I always spray my arrangements with a clean acrylic sealer. Then when the flowers get dusty (or at least they do at my house) lol, all you have to do is take a hair dryer on low setting (no heat) and blow it off. Very easy! Both of these will go to my booth at a local flea market. Now if they will just sell, then I did have a productive day. I for sure will fix some of these for my house also. I hope you enjoyed your visit, thank you for stopping by.
I just love these old windows! I think I have five of them in my house and have fixed some for other friends to. They are so versatile, whether you put pictures behind them, posters, or just about anything you can think of. On this one, I first painted it white and then came back and brushed gold paint on it, then distressed it some. I had some red satin fabric that I stapled on the back of the frame. On some windows that I fix, I actually hot glue braid around the window next to the frame to stabilize the glass. The letters are the stick on kind, can't remember the brand, I got them at Hobby Lobby. I didn't use anything to make sure my lines were straight, I just started sticking. lol. Sometimes there is just not time for perfection, and I kind of liked the random look to. Oh forgot to mention, make sure the glass is very clean front and back, learned that the hard way.( I also have one in my guest room that has a piece of an old quilt behind it that matches the quilt I have on my bed). Two screws (don't know what they are called) into the back with wire attached made it easy to hang. This one wasn't heavy so probably a picture hanger would work. Anyway, just love these old windows! They come in all shapes and sizes, maybe you will have to try one for yourself. Thank you for stopping by! Have a wonderful week!
After 2 days, I can call it quits!

Before and After pictures of my cabinets. Of course, when you start it seems there is no end. lol. By the time I got finished, my curtains and chair covers had to be changed. Still haven't put any thing above the sink. This house that we bought 4 years ago had been built 30 years ago. It has a lot of warts, but also has lots of character to. We just love it, anyway this room had a wallpaper around the top and at this time I just didn't want to take it down. So I just put another one on top of it, then we did a faux treatment. When the economy comes back (hopefully soon) then we can do a big renovation. In the meantime, cabinets had to be painted and spiffied (is that a word) up a bit.
Thank you for stopping by, I hope your week will be blessed.

I just love floral design! It has always been on the top of my list as things I so enjoy doing and learning about. Nearly 20 years ago hubby and I lived in Germantown Tennessee and I was able to take classes at Ramsey's school of florist design in downtown Memphis. Boy, did that give me an addiction I still have today! lol. I guess it is like any thing else, you finally decide on a style and mine of choice is European traditional design. The concept of flowers being a part of everyday life just suits me to a tea! Oh, I know there are many who are not fond of "fake", but for me that has no green thumb at all, the fake is a blessing. lol. The artificial flowers that are now manufactured are nothing like in the "old" days. They are beautiful and last for as long as they are taken care of. The ones shown in the pictures are just a sample of what is out there. Containers are something else I am always on the hunt for. Flea markets, garage sales, and goodwill offer a wonderful variety and I try to keep several on hand. For this particular one, this container was given to me and I couldn't wait to fill it up and put it on my dining room table. I also love to use fruit and berries, looooove the lemons. So now my table has gone from Christmas to something that will be staying for awhile. I will have to post pictures of my shop soon to. A place where I can make a mess and then leave it. A place where I can create and be so thankful for one of the blessings God has given to me. I hope you have a wonderful and safe week!

I will be linking up with Metamorphosis Monday, here is the link, please check them out you will be inspired. Lots of things going on as I am sure there is with you. First of all, I would like to thank you for your kind visits to my blog. I so enjoy home dec, floral design and in general making our home comfortable and inviting. Making people feel welcome and relaxed is truly my main goal. It is not entertaining, but hospitality as the Bible teaches. Next week I will begin to pack boxes and get all the Christmas decorations back in their place. Then as you can see from the pictures, I have already started doing custom designs again. These two were for a girl with a french country style home, so of course chickens (a rooster in this case) grapes, baskets etc are called for in the design. It is also my favorite of all the styles in home decor. Because I can never remember to take pictures of the process, I will just give you some particulars. The large one (without the rooster) was 32 inches wide and about that tall. Her chandelier was 39 inches from the table top and her table was 88 inches long. The container was metal which also goes along with the style and it was approximately 10 inches wide. Just standard floral supplies with everything glued in and sprayed with a finish to protect the flowers. The rooster was smaller because it sits in front of a window on a farm table. So here goes and I love it! No telling what will be coming up next. One thing for sure in the near future is painting my kitchen cabinets! That will be quite a job! I am slowly getting some things done to this wonderful home that God has given to us. Thank you again for your visits this year! I send blessings to you and your family as we begin this new year!
I love decorating especially for Christmas! Sometimes I wish the Holiday Season lasted longer, but then we all would be stressed to the max! lol. This year hubby and I are hosting our Church Christmas party in our home, and we are excited about that!!! A chance to get together with friends and enjoy spending time with them in a relaxed atmosphere. BUT, always remembering the real reason for the holiday. Thank you for stopping by! The pictures posted are vignettes, I didn't post the sun porch where my trees are at because I have them in a different place on my blog. This one will be the last (I think) of the "decorating for the holidays" posts. I have enjoyed going to other blogs and seeing all the wonderful, beautiful ideas that you ladies have. It does seem like this year everyone has "gone overboard" and I love it!
Hubby and I send blessings to you and your family!
Merry Christmas!

Christmas is not very far away and I had just about finished with my decorating when I noticed my sun room needed something on the table. And I had found this cute little rooster in my stash so here he is all decked out in his pretty white holiday apparel. Cute isn't he? I am just in the notion that chickens whether of the male or female variety can be just about anywhere in my house. I just love those little critters! I do tend to lean to the French country style of decorating and they are a must. I would also have to say my style is eclectic. If I like it then it fits somewhere! Although I do a lot of decorative painting, murals etc, my first love is floral design. European Design is truly my favorite. Does it sound like I just like to decorate? My husband says I like to play and color! Well, maybe he is right. lol. With this arrangement the container is always tricky and I look for the right scale to what ever it will be sitting on. This one was just right also because there is a ceiling fan about to. The usual foam, moss, filler, and flowers and of course the little white guy finished the design. Now he is just sitting there waiting for someone to say how cute he is. Thank you for stopping by, I love to visit yours and see all the creative things you do. You all are so talented. Have a blessed and happy safe week!

Please check out Between Naps on the Porch, you surely will be inspired to decorate. My hubby thought I had surely lost my mind when I started November 2nd, but I had lots to do not only with mine, but I had a booth at a local flea market to keep up with, soooo. I started early and now I am through. I have shared most of what I have already done, but will give a run down on them.
the first picture is my sun porch where I put all my (5) trees out there. That way it was out of my way and we can still enjoy it at night because we can see it from our den.
2. I wrapped my pictures with wrapping paper to make it coordinate with the room
3. This wreath I made for my booth at the flea market.
4. My faux fireplace
5. I designed the wreath for my front door.
6. Outside looking in on my Christmas Sun porch
7. Dining room table.
The way our house is situated, everyone comes to our back door instead of the front. So no one sees the front of my house, just the back because it sits sideways to the street and faces the river which is a wonderful view for us, but not good for decorating. So the back porch it is! I have a table that sits on the right side of the door that is always fun to put something on. The first picture you see is made with a simple grapevine wreath and deco mesh that I have absolutely fell in love with. I have used it on several of my wreaths for my booth and folks really seem to like them. Pine cones and a few ornaments are hot glued in and a lantern sits in the middle. Very simple to do. The wreath was very easy to. Again with the deco mesh and a few ornaments and berries was all that was needed. The urn was the most fun! I cut branches from our cedar tree and holly bush for the greenery, then more deco mesh (loving that stuff) and ornaments glued in so the wind won't blow them away. The little tree sits in two grapevine wreaths with a lantern behind and wa la, that is it. Very simple and it didn't take very long to do. I hope you enjoyed my very quick directions to. lol. Have a wonderful time decorating! Thank you for
I have been having so much fun decorating this year for Christmas! But decorating a mantel is a challenge for me! So after the second time, I was satisfied. As you can see the old window on the left side probably took longer than anything. After a lot of cleaning I painted the wood a bright gold and the quote on the window was just the stick on kind. Love those things! I have them on other old windows in my house. The garland was way to long, so I just doubled it and then filled in with the ornaments and bows. I have a small uplight to shine on the wreath, there just wasn't enough light at night. The fireplace surround was in pieces when I bought it, hubby put it all back together and in order for it to look natural. I used thumb tacks to attach black fabric on the wall behind the electric logs, black fabric was also used on the floor. The logs sounds like fire popping and it so real, I have actually seen people back up to it to get warm. lol. I have tried to make it as realistic as possible. I hope you enjoy decorating and have as much fun as I do. Be sure and check out Metamorphosis Monday over at Between Naps on the Porch. You will be inspired. Thank you for stopping by! Blessings to you!
I still love candles! I know that Scentsy products are probably safer, having a little bulb melting the scents, but I can't do without my candles. I decorate with them, many of them have never been burned. I just love them in my arrangements. So all that to say, I found some unique ways to decorate them. Who would have ever thought that epson salt and mod podge combination could look so pretty. I also used glitter but mostly use them for the holidays. All I did was brush a moderate amount of Mod Podge on the candle, just making sure it is evenly coated especially at the bottom and the top. I had paper plates that I filled with the salt and just rolled the candle until it was covered. It was hard to make sure I didn't leave my finger prints on the candle moving it around but of course I did, so I just put more mod podge and more salt and it was fine. I also finished the top the same way and then let them dry. That didn't take very long, and then just shaking off the excess and walaaaaaa. You have your masterpiece of sorts!!! The little glass birds that are shown was done the same way except I used the glitter. The process is the same and they really turned out pretty to. The first two pictures shows them wet and the last ones are dry. I just love it, hope you enjoy it to. Maybe you will make some of your own! I am excited to use some of them in my decorating and the others will be taken to my booth at our local flea market.
I know what you are thinking! It is way to early for this and I agree, but there is so much going on this month and next that I decided to just go ahead. We have a sunporch on the back of our house and a sunroom on the front, and when it is cold neither one is really used. So it is a perfect place to make my "Christmas Room". I have three trees up along with other decorations and it is still not finished. But the trees are decorated. I have no theme or a reason, I just use what I have. It is all from years of collecting. I keep thinking every year I will buy some new ones, maybe next year! My lights stay on the tree and on this first one, there is about 700. The smaller ones are 100. I have two large pictures that I will put wrapping paper on with a bow to make it look like a large package. I will post pictures of it later and try to go all around the room. I also have lights that go around the top of the room. Since this is the only room I will decorate except one of my mantles and because we can sit and look through the french doors, we will be able to enjoy it until after Christmas. I hope you enjoy it to!
